John Mahelik has flown 37 missions with the LA B Crew doing low altitude bombing. And today he completed his 38th mission.
"I was 23 years old and I was the oldest man in the crew. We would go out at night, search for enemy combats. If we'd find one...we'd drop down 400 feet. Come in and drop three 500 pound bombs.
For many world war two veterans...this will be the first time that they've flown in these planes since the war.
On Friday at 7 a.m...John and two other world war two veterans buckled up for their inbound flight from gillette wyoming to fort collins.
During the flight...John crawled to the front of the plane and sat one last time in the spot he spent as a young 23-year-old soldier in world war two.
And for a good ten minutes....john sat in the nose of the plane and remembered when he flew in his b24.
"These planes are around 65-67 years old."
