OGDEN, Utah – Northern Colorado's Stephanie Catlin was named the Big Sky Conference Co-Women's Tennis Player of the Week on Tuesday, earning the first weekly honor of her career.
Catlin, a junior from Basingstoke, England, won two critical singles matches at the No. 3 spot, over the weekend to give Northern Colorado the road sweep over Idaho State and Weber State and clinch a berth to the Big Sky Championship.
On Saturday, Catlin defeated ISU's Svenja Tegtmeier 2-6, 6-0, 6-2 and then came back to win 6-3, 6-1 over Weber State's Nittaya Phonharath. Catlin and partner Elizabeth Tapia (Panama City, Panama) also won both doubles matches at No. 1, winning 8-4 over ISU and 8-5 over WSU.
"I am extremely proud of Steph's performances the past few weeks," Coach Brenda Vlasak said. "She has been working hard in a few aspects of her game and has made drastic improvements. Steph is a very talented athlete who I believe can beat anyone she steps foot on the court with."
The award is the second this season for the Bears, as Tapia earned Player of the Week on March 12. These are the first two times the team has earned a player of the week award since joining the league in 2007.
Catlin, Tapia and the rest of the Bears are back in action on Monday, April 22 when they host in-state rival Colorado State at the Butler-Hancock Tennis Courts at 11 am.
